Before You Slather on That Bottle Tan...

1. Exfoliate in the shower before self-tanner application, otherwise the tanner will stick to your dead skin and make you appear mottled, splotched and a perfect example of a self-tanning "don't."
2. Moisturize knees, elbows and creases or risk having self-tanner settle into creases.
3. If you are fair-skinned, do not kid yourself into buying the darkest tanning solution on the shelf. Leave the extra-strength solution for the olive-skinned girls.
4. Test the shade out on an arm first. A discolored patch of arm is much easier to hide than an entire body.
5. Invest in a good self-tanner (I like Clarins). In the case of self-tanners, remember: cheap can reak.
6. If you are as pale as a whale's belly, mix in a few drops of moisturizer to your self-tanner before applying to face. This dillutes it just a bit.
7. Let the stuff dry the allotted time on the bottle. Some tanners will rub off on clothes and wash out in a shower.
8. Remember: If you can smell yourself, you know others can really smell you. If you are tanning for a date, consider applying the tanner a day before the event so you can shower first.
